Read, Pray, Listen

Before I was Catholic I thought Catholics worshipped the Virgin Mary. I am here to tell you, we do not. We love her, but we don't worship her. We honor her, but we don't worship her. We ask her to pray for us, but we don't worship her. We don't talk to her as though she were God. We do call her "mother" and now that I've been Catholic for over 20 years I wonder why ALL Christians don't love her as much as we do.
Here's the reason. We love Mary because she is the mother of Jesus. She wasn't just a womb that God borrowed. She is a person, a human person, a woman who was pregnant, gave birth to and raised Jesus; who was honored above all other women in all of history because the God of the Universe chose her to be his mom.
When I first met my husband's parents they were strangers. It didn't take long to feel like they were family. I loved my husband's mother. I honored her. I gave her Christmas and birthday presents. I got advice from her. And when she was sick, and finally died, I grieved deeply at her passing. I loved my husband's mom. And it didn't take anything away from my love for my husband. In fact, it endeared me to him even more.
If you say you love Jesus but you don't love his mom, how does that work? She is the person Jesus loved the most and was the closest to! She wiped his little nose. She changed his nappies and kissed his boo-boos. They loved each other dearly. And whomever Jesus loves, His mother loves too. That is just life as a human being. God became Man to save us. Mary has a great deal to do with that, so we are thankful to her YES, thankful for her love of our Savior, and because Jesus loves her, so do we.
