Lord, help me to know myself, to admit my sins, and bring them swiftly to you, the Good Doctor of my Soul.
First, help me to recognize and confess sins against my family.
Do I look down on my spouse? Do I feel superior to him or to her for any reason? Do I look down on any of my children? Do I look down on any family member because of their behavior, habits, life choices or failures? Do I look down on either of my parents? Do I refuse to forgive anyone in my family for wrongs they have done to me?
Lord, show me any sins of a superior attitude toward my family members. Make my sins clear to me that I might repent, be forgiven and cleansed, and love as I have been loved.
Lord, help me to recognize and confess sins against my neighbor.
Do I look down on my neighbor because he or she is poor? Do I look down on my neighbor because he or she is homeless, disabled, unemployed, on drugs, on welfare, on parole, or uses food stamps? Do I look down on my neighbor because she is a single mother?
Do I look down on my neighbor because he or she has more money than I do? Because he or she has better things, more education, successful children?
Do I look down on my neighbor because of a lifestyle choice I don’t like? Because of body size? Because of physical appearance or poor grooming? Because of sexual orientation?
Do I look down on my neighbor because of his or her legal status? Because of his or her country of origin? Because he or she speaks with an accent, or doesn’t know English at all?
Do I look down on my neighbor because of his or her skin color? Do I look down on my neighbor because his ethnic and cultural heritage is different from my own?
Do I look down on my neighbor because he or she does not share my religious views? My political views? My moral standards? My level of education?
Do I look down on my neighbor because of his sins which are different from my own?
Do I fail to see the image of God in every person I meet? Do I fail to see in every man, woman, and child, my own brother, my own sister?
Open my eyes, O Lord, that I may see the truth, love the truth, live the truth, and that I may turn my back on and repent of all my sins, especially the sin of looking down on another one of your children. Forgive me, Oh Jesus, and fill me with YOUR supernatural love. Let me bring peace to the world, through You.
