Read, Pray, Listen

We've been pondering the idea of praying BIG during Lent, using the Seven Sorrows of Mary as a guide. Today we encounter the Fourth Sorrow of Mary: seeing Jesus carrying His heavy cross. Now Mary begins to feel the sword in her heart that Simeon predicted. She sees her son, beaten, bloody, crushed under the weight of the cross. He is mocked. People laugh, jeer and spit. The Roman soldiers urge him on with whips and spears. Mary watches in silence and her heart breaks.
When we pray BIG, we pray for every single parent who is suffering because their child is suffering. Every parent in the world who is, this day, watching a child who is sick, addicted, in a bad marriage, in prison, wounded, living in mortal sin. We pray for every parent worrying over a sick infant, child, teen or adult child. We pray for Jesus to ease their anguish; for someone to comfort them; for their guardian angel to urge them to hope.
Why pray BIG? Why pray for all these people we don't know? Because they belong to God. He has created them and He loves them. He knows who they are. We love them, we treat them as brothers and sisters by praying for them. Praying BIG also takes us away from our small sufferings and helps us turn outward - to help the sufferings of others. When we turn from self towards others, we are doing the work of Mercy in this world.
