Read, Pray, Listen

Mary was the first person to love Jesus. She said "Yes!" to the angel Gabriel. She said "Yes!" to being an unmarried mother. She knew from the beginning that her child was not ordinary - that he was indeed the Son of God. Think of how she thrilled at his first kick, his first smile, his first word? Mary loved him first and best, as does every mother. And she shows us the way of love and obedience.
We Catholics look to Mary to teach us how to be closer and more obedient to Jesus. He was HER Lord and Savior before anyone else. Her whole life was one of attentive love of her son and the people around them. When the wine ran out at a wedding, Mary's heart went out to the young couple. She asked her son to do something about it. After a short conversation she turned to the servants.
Mary told the servants to do whatever Jesus told them to do. They did, and the water jugs were filled with perfectly delicious wine. Jesus did his first public miracle at the request of his mom. She tells us the same thing. "Do whatever Jesus tells you to do." She shows us the way of trust and obedience.
If you love Jesus, learn to love his mom. She will help you love him better. She will remind you of his love for you. She will pray for you to her son and intercede for you. Yes, pray to Jesus! But ask for his mom's prayers too. For two thousand years saints and sinners alike have turned to Mary for prayer - not because they couldn't pray to Jesus - but because she loves whomever her son loves, and she prays faithfully for all of us.
